BackMusic at Aylesford School Warwick focuses on the three main disciplines: Performing, Composing and Appraising. These three areas are the pillars in music education that creates the rounded musician.

New Knowledge: | For unit 1, students will learn an in-depth knowledge of music theory from intervals and key signatures to different forms of notation such as sol-fa, guitar and drum tab. For unit 3, students will learn how different ensembles learn, rehearse and perform pieces of music to a high standard. Students will also learn about stagecraft and how to engage with an audience. | For unit 1, students will learn about melodic and harmonic devices and how to use them in a composition. For unit 3, students will start their assignments, rehearsing and performing 3 pieces of music along with a musical analysis and an evaluation. |
For unit 1, students will learn how to arrange for different types of ensembles, how to arrange using transposing and concert pitch instruments and how to transpose music into different keys. For unit 2, students learn about professional practises in the music industry as well as music industry roles, organisations and requirements. For unit 3, students complete their assignments. |

Independent Activities | Students can research in more depth the theory topics covered in unit 1 as well as finding pieces of music and analysing the theory features learnt in lessons. Students should also be working on their instrumental techniques by performing different styles of music in different arrangements. | Students can compose melodic and harmonic phrases based on a given stimulus to continue their understanding. Students could also click on the music matters link below to further deepen their theoretical, melodic and harmonic knowledge. Students should be working on their own individual part in relation to their ensemble performance. | Students can continue practising their arrangement skills by finding melody and chord sheets online. This task can be done using either manuscript paper or software notation. Students could arrange for different ensembles such as an orchestra or a rock band and for different transposing instruments such as a horn in F or clarinet in A. |

In unit 6, students will learn how a solo performer prepares for a concert in relation to warm up routines and exercises. Students will also learn how a solo artist commands a stage and an audience. | In this term, students will learn how to rehearse pieces of music effectively using a rehearsal log in preparation for their concert. |
