Key Topic: Woyzeck & Brecht/ Live Theatre Review Intro Set Text – That Face & Stanislavsky Component 1 Devised Portfolio & Performance
New Knowledge:
  • To know and understand the characters, plot and themes of ‘Woyzeck’.
  •  To explore practically the complete play text ‘Woyzeck’ by Buchner from the point of view of a theatre director applying the techniques of the theatre practitioner Bertolt Brecht.
  •  To be introduced to the Live Theatre Review requirements for the written exam.
  •  To understand how to analyse live theatre in depth and critically evaluate all the staging elements and acting skills.
  • Knowledge of plat, characters and themes of “That Face” by Polly Stenham.
  •  How to apply different staging in the exploration of text.
  •  To know the principles of “building a character” according to the principles of Stanislavsky.
  •  How to identify meaning and messages within a play text.
  •  How design elements contribute to the interpretation of play scripts in performance.
  • To know how to develop an original piece of theatre based on an extract from a full play text considering its context, characters, plot and themes.
  •   To collaborate independently as an ensemble to create and perform a live piece of theatre with clear intentions and impact.
  •  To understand and explore the methodologies of the practitioner Antonin Artaud.
  •  To know how to undertake relevant historical, social, cultural, research material and apply it to the theatre piece.
  •  How to create a portfolio of written evidence as part of coursework for this component.
Previous Knowledge Required:
  • How to interpret a playtext from an acting and a directorial point of view.
  • The methodologies of the theatre practitioner Bertolt Brecht.
  • Basic Knowledge of how to evaluate live theatre regarding the acting and set 
  • To know strategies of rehearsals.
  •  To know the role and purpose of stage directions.
  •  To know different techniques of rehearsals.
  •  To know the role of the Director in bringing play scripts to life as performance pieces.
  •  To differentiate between the different principles of different practitioners.
  • Knowing how to respond to a stimulus to create a performance piece.
  •  Know how to record and document ideas for a performance piece.
  •  How to develop a piece of drama with a clear message, meaning and moral that can have an impact on an audience.
  • Know how to construct a scene, write a script and direct others.
  •  To know how to organise rehearsal time in preparation for a live performance
  •  To know how to alter and amend in order to improve the drama piece for performance.
  •  To know how to design the lighting, set, sound and costume for greatest enhancement and impact.

  • To practically explore a play text through workshop techniques in depth both as directors and actors.
  • To be able to analyse a live theatre performance in depth referring to the themes, performance skills and design elements critically. 
  • How to interpret characters.
  •  How to interpret proxemics within performance.
  •  Applying rehearse skills from the perspective off the perspective of the Director.
  •  To be able to apply the principles of naturalism towards characterisation.
  •  To be able to discuss and evaluate the role of design elements in the performance process and production.
  • Ability to apply the methodologies of Artaud to devised work and to document it.
  •  Ability to work independently as an ensemble for the drama.
  • Ability to complete relevant independent research and document how it was used.

Independent Activities: Watch a live performance of Woyzeck and analyse how they have produced it both directorially and with their design.  From page to stage – Research activities  exploring the process of  lift play scripts of the page to become a performance piece.  Watch previous cohorts Component 1 Edexcel devised performances either on line or ask your drama teacher.
